MS-DOS Player for Win32-x64 is a tiny DOS emulator which enables running simple DOS-only programs under 32 or 64-bit Windows. The program doesn't emulate hardware like graphics or sound cards, which means it can't be used for running games or some other more complex software. Cia tradecraft manual. MS-DOS 7 is a computer operating system which has never been released separately by its creator Microsoft,[1] but which corresponds to the basic (real mode) of the Windows 9x family of operating systems. Windows 95 reports to be MS-DOS 7.0, while Windows 98 and Windows 98SE report as 7.1.
Overview[edit]
A major difference between earlier versions of MS-DOS is the usage of the MSDOS.SYS file.[2] In version 7 this is not a binary file, but a pure setting file. The older boot style, where Windows is not automatically started and the system boots into a DOS command shell, could keep on using that same style by setting BootGUI=0 in the MSDOS.SYS-file. Otherwise, Windows from Windows 95 onward will automatically start up on boot. However this was in reality only an automatic call for the file WIN.COM, the Windows starting file. Windows 95 and 98 are both highly dependent on a Real mode system, although MS-DOS 7 possibly is more 'hidden' than earlier versions of MS-DOS. This is also true for Windows Millennium Edition, but 'ME' prevents users from using Real mode.

Also the paths for (a plausible but actually not necessary) Windows directory and Boot directory is to be set in this new version of the MSDOS.SYS-file. Whilst IO.SYS (although binary different) remained as the initial executive startup file which BIOS booting routines fires up, if located correctly. Also the COMMAND.COM file keeps a handle on the command prompt. The typical DOS setting files CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT essentially retained their functions from earlier versions of MS-DOS (although memory allocation was no longer needed).
Although only included in Windows releases (the last stand alone release of MS-DOS ever was the 6.22 version), MS-DOS 7 can fairly easily be extracted from Windows 95/98, and be used alone on other computers, just as the earlier versions. Actually MS-DOS 7/7.1 works fine on many modern (as of 2016) motherboards (at least with PS2-keyboards), in sharp contrast to Windows 95/98. Although it has to be installed at a fairly small partition, located at 'the top' of the hard drive and formatted with FAT32. Another difference is that MS-DOS 7/7.1 requires a 80386 or higher processor, it fails to boot on 80286-class or lower x86 hardware.
Any installation must be done prior to any Windows installation, and through the SYS command (executing the SYS.COM file), preferably from a folder on a Ramdrive created by a bootable disc. Correct versions of IO.SYS (especially) must exist in the same folder as SYS.COM together with DRVSPACE.BIN, MSDOS.SYS, MSDOS.--- as well as COMMAND.COM, AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS. All other files can be copied thereafter. (In Windows 95/98 they are found in either the root folder or in the C:WINDOWSCOMMAND folder)

Ms Dos For Windows 10
In its heyday, MS-DOS, PC-DOS and its commercial clones, DR-DOS, was used on a large number of computers, with innumerable piecesof software developed for it. While it is now a dim memory today, it can still be used for a number of purposes including itsuse as an embedded system (for example, inside cash registers), to run old programs and games, or to study its code. It isalso useful for those who have lived through that era and want to run it for nostalgic reasons.

The DOS-compatible operating systems listed on this page usually provide a bootable media which you can use to boot and installthe DOS variant. Some of them come with a full complement of tools and utilities, perhaps even more than those supplied with thecommercial MSDOS of old.
Note that if your purpose of getting DOS is to play some old DOS games on your Windows machine, you may want tocheck out DOSBox, which is listed on theFree PC Emulators and Virtual Machinespage.

The source code for the old Microsoft DOS version 1.25 and 2.0 has been released by Microsoft under theopen source MIT License. In general though, unless you are really using it for those purposes, the softwareis probably too old to be useful on a modern computer, assuming it can even work on current processors, chipsets, buses and interfaces. In fact, you'll most likely need anemulator to have a hope of gettingit to run at all.
FreeDOS is the well-known DOS compatible OS that is released under an open source licence. The operating system allows you to runold programs, be it games, business applications or other DOS software, under an environment that emulated the old Microsoft DOS system. It comes with a whole plethora of utilities, including clones of those you can find distributed with MS-DOS and PC-DOS, even thingslike a replacement for the HIMEM.SYS, EMM386.SYS (memory managers to provide access to memory above the old 640 KB barrier)and MSCDEX.EXE (driver for allowing DOS access to CDROM drives), a mouse driver, etc. However, it goesbeyond simply being a DOS clone - it has long filename support in the command.com replacement as well as other tools, FAT32 support, modern archivers like 7zip, zip, unzip, etc. This is a very popular substitute for the old MSDOS among people who still have need for it. It can also be used in embedded systems.
FreeDOS-32 is a 32-bit reimplementation of MS-DOS that runs in 32-bit protected mode. It is intended to run protected mode DOS programsand has its own 32-bit device drivers. There is also some support for Windows console programs. Unfortunately, development for thisoperating system appears to have halted, even before it has reached release status. That is, although you can download the system,it is still not in a state that can be used in a production environment (or any environment, for that matter).
The Chinese version of IBM PC-DOS 2000 is available free from IBM's FTP site. Unlike some of the other free DOS clones listed onthis page,PC-DOS 2000 is fairly out-of-date with no updates since the date it wasreleased. Update: It looks like the software is no longer available (or at least I couldn't accessit the last time I tried to check). For the record, it used to be found at
